How to Identify Stray Animals for Rescue ?

You will often find stray cats and dogs wandering in parks, streets or residential areas of Shanghai. There is an estimate of over 100,000 stray dogs and cats in Shanghai. We cannot save every stray animal out there and no organization can take in every stray! We can only try our best to identify and possibly save the animals with the greatest needs:

  1. Friendly and affectionate

Cat or dog that appears friendly, affectionate and approachable, but becomes sad or clingy when you move away from it is most likely abandoned. For newly abandoned animals, life as a stray is especially traumatic and dangerous. It is best to find an adoption family for them, and they will adapt to domestic life easily.

  1. Starving

Cat or dog that appears to be starving and dirty could be abandoned pets, or feral (wild) dog or cat that are weak. If you intend to feed them long term, be aware of the following:

-         If it is a female cat, please have it spayed.

-         Do not let it become affectionate with you. It will cause greater danger to itself if it gets too trusting of humans.

-         Keep the feeding grounds clean and hidden.

-         Stray dogs are usually captured and killed by city workers, so it is best to find adoption homes for stray dogs.

  1. An injured cat or dog.

-         Take injured cats or dogs to a vet.

Most of the stray animals around Shanghai were abandoned by individuals or families who didn’t know how to care for a pet, people changed their minds or had no real intentions of keeping a pet long term. These abandoned animals had already been through physical and/or psychological trauma more than they deserve! Therefore, when you bring an abandoned animal home, please commit to caring for it long term, or find a suitable permanent home!
